Leave a Penny, Take a Penny
On April 23rd 2009, Eyelevel Gallery became “Unplugged” to celebrate its 35th Anniversary. During this time the gallery reverted back to 1974, the year of its opening. I participated in collaboration with Jennifer Simaitis as part of “35 days of Non-Organized Art”.
Leave a penny, Take a penny was an exchange project that depended on community participation. We asked members of the community to dig deep into the dark recesses of their piggy banks to find pennies minted in 1974. Participants dropped off their penny/pennies in a labeled box located at Eyelevel Gallery. In exchange for a 1974 penny, the participant received a rubbing of their penny/pennies. On the 35th day (May 27th 2009), the collected pennies were exhibited and the rubbings were created from the pennies collected. At that time participants could claim their editioned and signed rubbings. |
